Important Winter Corn Tour May 21st Are you interested in a crop which will grow in the winter time to take the place of corn? parley is called winter corn. Many using barley in the place of A trip to "study barley exprri ments at Statesville Experiment Station is being planned for May 21st. As much as 85 bushels per acre is being grown "there with some of the new varieties. - Experimental work with new varieties of wheat and oats will be studied. If you have not been to see this extensive work in small grain you should not miss this tour. Dr. G. K. Middleton, who is in charge of this work will explain the different plots; varieties and treatment. You will see things you never thought existed in the small grain field. Last year two or three carloads went from Polk County and five or six ordered some of the leading strains of oats and barley. One / JWfctmer has thirty acres of the new -;«rdrded Barley sown this year an^ another has six bushels of each. Farmers who wish to make the trip should get in a reservation at once with the County Agent. Two or three cars may be avail able if farmers chip in on ex penses. The first to come will be the ones who will get the seats in the cars. The party will leave the courthouse at 10 o’clock Thursday morning, May 21. Don’t wait or you will be too late. Russell Durham has .joined the U. S. Army Air Corps at Fort Jackson. Dr. Sewall, Baccalaureate Speaker For Tryon High School Superintendent M. B. Caldwell, has announced that Dr. Chas. G. Sewall of Tryon and Christmas Cove, Maine, will preach the bac calaureate sermoi* for the Tryon commencement exercises. The ser vice will be held Sunday night, May 24th, at Tryon school audi torium. All the ministers of the community will have a part on the program as customary .On May 29th, commencement address will be delivered by Editor Paul 0. Nafe, editor of Marion, N. C., for merly one of the editors of the Christian Science Monitor and re cently elected president of the Western North Carolina Press association. WEST MADE WARDEN Chairman Chas. J. Lynch of the Polk County Defense Council, to day made public his appointment of Charles C. West as chief air raid warden for Tryon. Mr. West is charged with the specific duty of organizing, coordinating and directing such wardens, aux iliary squads and fire watchers as recommended by the director of the Citizens Defense Corps and Chairman of the Polk County De fense Council. Mayor Missildine and Chairman Lynch urge all public officials and private citizens to render the chief air raid warden full cooperation, aid anri good will in his discharge of duties as such. Warden West requests all citizens who are will ing to volunteer for any of the duties mentioned in the above _Continued on Back Page__
